In February 2026, an Olathe Police officer pulled over a 21-year-old Guatemalan man, along with his sister, and contacted an ICE hotline to report the location of the siblings. The officer detained them for over 30 minutes until federal agents arrived and the man was later deported. Olathe Police policy generally limits involvement in pure immigration enforcement for administrative (civil) warrants. Police Chief Mike Butaud confirmed the officer’s actions violated policy and that disciplinary action occurred, however, the officer remains employed. Records show that the traffic stop was officially documented as “assisting an outside agency.”
Separate ICE activity in Olathe has also drawn attention, including detentions involving a U.S. citizen. Olathe residents have voiced their concerns about the police department overstepping their jurisdiction and assisting in ICE operations.
